Energy Conservation Program
Every dollar not spent on energy is a dollar saved for education.
Marana Schools Earn National Recognition
Demonstrating a commitment to energy conservation, all eligible Marana schools earned the prestigious U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 2018 ENERGY STAR Certification for the third time. Earning EPA’s ENERGY STAR Certification puts Marana school buildings in the top 25% of the most energy-efficient nationwide, as well as being in the top 2 in the state to have the highest number of Energy Star Certified K-12 schools in Arizona and one of six in Arizona to have 17 or more buildings earn Energy Star Certification.
Much like an appliance in the home earns the ENERGY STAR certification; buildings are also awarded certification for energy efficiency. Buildings that earn EPA’s ENERGY STAR have met strict energy performance standards, use 35 percent less energy, and generate 35 percent fewer greenhouse gas emission than similar buildings across the nation.
District Employees Are Saving Money...Over $2.4 million!
The Marana Unified School District embraces energy conservation and believes it is their responsibility to ensure that every reasonable effort is made to conserve energy and natural resources while exercising sound financial management.
With the cost of utilities being the second largest budget line-item for the District, and the prices for electricity, natural gas, and water steadily increasing, District Administration and Governing Board members took a proactive step in good stewardship of budgeted funds and energy by embarking on a comprehensive behavior-based energy conservation and management program in the fall of 2013. This is not a short-term “green project.” It’s a comprehensive, rigorous and sustainable energy program to help the District save money for years to come.
Since beginning this serious energy conservation program, the District has saved over $2,400,000 from expected energy costs, and the environmental impact is equal to taking 2,429 cars off the street or planting 298,974 trees in our community! Through this program the District is creating a culture of energy conservation that is saving teaching positions, student programs and the environment.
Risk Free - No Increase to Budget - No New Equipment
This comprehensive, rigorous energy conservation and management program is sustainable and will save significant money during challenging economic times while doing something positive for the environment.
MUSD BrightEE Award Video
In 2014 the Marana Unified School District received the TEP BrightEE award for their outstanding commitment to energy efficiency. A variety of energy efficiency measures included the installation of compact fluorescent lamps, delamping of existing fixtures, installation of LED exit signs, and installation of new premium T8 lamps and T5 fixtures. Additionally, two new water-cooled chillers were installed along with variable speed drives on motors. Watch the entire video to see our efforts!
